Windsor River Road & Windsor Road intersection Improvements

The intersection of Windsor River Road and Windsor Road provides access to the Town Center, commercial retail centers, and the future Sonoma Marin Rail Transit (SMART) transit station. With the return of rail service to the SMART corridor, the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) has identified a number of safety improvements that are needed, requiring the reconstruction of the intersection. The goals of the project are to improve traffic circulation and pedestrian and bicycle safety, and to connect a multi-use path along the SMART corridor.

The process will include development of intersection layout alternatives and the recommendation of a preferred alternative.  Community and stakeholder input will be gathered during public workshops. Additional input will be gathered from a Technical Working Group, and during Town Planning Commission and Town Council meetings.  (Click on the “Meetings” link above for a complete schedule of meetings.) Alternatives will include (1) a roundabout and (2) renovating the 4-way intersection with new traffic signals, railroad gates, and pedestrian safety improvements. The project will also evaluate construction of a multi-use trail within the SMART right-of-way.
